Our Mission

To provide experiential learning in, and exposure to, international cultures featuring dance, instrumental music, singing, crafts, storytelling and other folklore.

History of CMAI

The California Multicultural Arts Institute, Inc. was originally incorporated on March 14, 1975, as a California non-profit public benefit corporation under the name of Mendocino Folklore Camp, Inc. Its specific and primary purpose was to operate an educational camp, Mendocino Folklore Camp, where people could join together with ethnic teachers to study and develop skills in Folkdance and Folk Music, and to learn about and practice ethnic arts and crafts. This one-week long residential camp took place yearly at the Mendocino Woodlands State Park, Camp 1, until its last camp in 2019. In 1980 a second week-long educational camp, Scandia Camp Mendocino, was added to the non-profit’s sponsored programs. In 2013, the AMAN Folk Ensemble Alumni Society (AMAN Society) became the non-profit’s third officially sponsored program in the lead-up to the 50th Anniversary Reunion of the Ensemble’s founding. Recognizing the expanded activities and scope of the non-profit, the Board decided to re-incorporate on March 18, 2014, under a new name, the California Multicultural Arts Institute, Inc. CMAI is dedicated to bringing culture to life and making it relevant to a new generation through scholarships, beginning classes, children’s classes, master classes and other outreach efforts.
